Mastering the Menu: The Restaurant Guide to Local Search

Your Google Business Profile isn't a digital business card anymore. It's an interactive menu, a booking engine, and a live source of reviews all in one place. Feed it the wrong data and you're leaving tables empty that should be full. Here's how to turn searches into seatings.

Your menu is your strongest asset

Google uses optical character recognition to read menu photos, but leaving your ranking to AI guesswork is a mistake worth avoiding entirely.

Use the GBP menu editor to list your best dishes, with sharp descriptions and clear pricing. This matters more than it looks: searches for "gluten-free pasta" or "vegan brunch" are high-intent, and if you haven't ticked the relevant dietary attributes- halal, vegan, gluten-free- you're invisible to exactly the customers most ready to book.

A PDF menu is a dead end for this. Google's AI can't reliably read one. Use a structured HTML menu or the GBP menu editor instead. When every ingredient is machine-readable, you win the long-tail searches built around specific ingredients too.

    High-intent calls to action

Every extra click between a search and a booking costs you a cover. The aim is getting from searching to sitting in as few taps as possible.

Integrate direct reservations through OpenTable, TheFork, or Resy. A Reserve button on your profile is the shortest route to a full house. If you offer takeaway, make sure your own site is the primary ordering link, not a third-party platform taking a cut of every order before the guest has even eaten.

    Visual storytelling

People choose a restaurant with their gut, and your photos are doing that convincing before a customer has read a word.

Your cover photo needs to set the right expectation instantly, candlelit and quiet or loud and industrial, whichever is true. Your hero dish photo should be high-resolution, shot in natural light, with no filters, showing exactly what a customer is coming for. Add a clear exterior shot too. A customer who walks past your door because they didn't recognise the signage never becomes a booking.

    Closing the AI discovery gap

Search has moved past "pizza near me." Customers are now asking Gemini things like "where can I get a quiet Sunday roast with gluten-free options and easy parking." Write your business description in natural, specific language rather than a list of keywords, mentioning your actual atmosphere and nearby landmarks. That's the context an AI model needs to recommend you for a query this specific.

    Best Practices

    Feature

    Why it matters

    Pro Tip

    Google reviews

Specific detail ranks better than generic praise

Google prompts guests for atmosphere and dishes. Ask regulars to mention specific meals, and use an NFC card to make leaving a review easier

    Q&As

Answering "do you...?" before it's asked builds trust

Post your own FAQs about dogs, children, and parking rather than waiting for someone to ask

    Google posts

    Drives conversion in real time

Use Offers for happy hour and Events for live music. Both surface directly in the map pack

    Google videos

    Strengthens map pack prominence

Upload short clips: a dish being plated, and a quick walkthrough from the door to the table

Mismatched expectations are the fastest route to a one-star review. If your profile promises fine dining but your space is a casual café, your reviews will say so. Be accurate about what you actually are. Customers with high intent value honesty over gloss every time.

A strong restaurant profile isn't built on vanity metrics. It's built on closing the distance between a search and a seated guest. Structure your menu data properly, automate your bookings, and keep your opening hours accurate, and you stop fighting the algorithm and start working with it.

Google is the front door to your restaurant now. Make sure it's open, accurate, and worth walking through.
