Menus & Ordering: Turn Your Google Profile into a Transactional Engine

    Michel van Luijtelaar

Google Business Profile used to be a digital directory. For hospitality and service businesses, it's become more like a storefront. Menu digitisation and ordering links mean your profile can now facilitate the actual sale, not just display information about it. If you're not using these tools, you're adding friction for the customer and handing your margin to a third-party platform instead.

Why your menu is your best SEO asset

Adding a structured menu to your profile does real work in two directions.

Google reads individual menu items as keywords. A customer searching "gluten-free pasta" or "best Pad Thai near me" is far more likely to find you if your menu is structured data rather than a blurry photo. A structured, transparently priced menu also removes friction for the customer directly: they can decide in seconds without clicking through to a slow-loading website or a PDF, which keeps them on the path to ordering rather than giving them a reason to leave.

    Building your digital menu

Google offers two ways to do this.

AI menu digitisation. Convert a physical menu or PDF into a digital list in seconds. Select "Edit menu" on your profile, choose "Photos of menu," and upload your file or a high-resolution photo. Select "Generate a menu", and Google's AI extracts the text, items, and prices. Check it for accuracy, then publish.

Manual configuration. Better if you want to curate specific sections or highlight house specials. Select "Edit menu," then "Add menu item," and enter the name, description, and price yourself. If Google has already pulled data from a third-party source, use the "Copy" feature and refine it to match your current branding, rather than starting from scratch.

Changes typically take 24 to 48 hours to appear on Maps and Search.

Online food delivery is a genuinely large and growing market; Statista's 2026 forecast puts global revenue at over $1.5 trillion. Ignoring that growth means leaving real volume on the table.

Ordering links are the transaction layer of your profile. They let customers order directly from Google Search and Maps, often the first place a customer encounters your business at all. Reducing the distance between discovery and purchase doesn't just improve the experience; it genuinely increases order volume: a visible, immediate ordering option encourages impulse purchases and removes the moment a customer might otherwise drift to a competitor with an easier checkout.

Go to your Business Profile, select Food ordering, and turn on "Accept orders." Select "Add a link" and enter your provider's link.

Some third-party providers with an existing relationship to your business may be added automatically, but your provider needs a direct API integration with Google for the "Order Online" button to actually appear.

Whether it's a booking URL you added yourself or a third-party integration that appeared without your say-so, leaving an unwanted button on your profile in 2026 isn't just untidy admin; it's a direct leak in your margin.

    • Manual links. URLs you or your team pasted in directly. Delete these from the "Bookings" or "Food Ordering" section by clearing the URL in the dashboard.
    • Integrated links. These come from providers like OpenTable, Deliveroo, or Fresha and appear automatically. Google Support can't remove these for you; they have to be disconnected at the source.

    To remove an integrated provider:

Go to Food Ordering or Bookings, find the platform under "Service Providers," and select "Remove Provider." This usually redirects you to the provider's opt-out page or a support form. Google requires providers to remove a link within five business days, and you're entitled to file a report if they don't comply.

If a third-party provider is slow to act, don't wait for them. Use the Preferred Link feature to move your own, commission-free link to the top instead. Marking your URL as "Preferred by business" pushes the third-party link down, so even if it's still technically on your profile, it's no longer the first thing a customer sees.

To set it up: go to Food Ordering, select your direct link from the list of providers, choose "Set as Preferred" for both pickup and delivery, and save.

    Bringing it together

A structured menu and a working ordering link do two different jobs. The menu gets you found. The ordering link turns that visibility into a sale, without a third-party platform taking a cut on the way. Treat them as one system rather than two separate tasks: a customer who finds your gluten-free pasta through search should be able to order it in the next tap, not get sent to a PDF or a slow-loading site first.

Check both regularly. Menus drift out of date, prices change, and third-party links have a habit of reappearing after you thought you'd removed them. A quarterly check of your menu accuracy and your preferred ordering link takes a few minutes and protects both your ranking and your margin.

Managing this across every location with GMBapi

Keeping menus current and ordering links accurate is manageable for one location. Across ten, fifty, or five hundred, it becomes a genuine operational load if you're doing it manually. GMBapi handles menu and content updates in bulk, so a new dish goes out across every location at once, correctly, without you touching each profile individually.
